Letter Season Is Open! A Peek Inside the North Pole Post Office

Elves sorting letters in the North Pole Post Office

Ho ho hello, merry readers! It’s your pal Jingles McGlitter, and I have the most exciting news of the year: letter season is officially open at the North Pole Post Office! The doors swung wide at sunrise, the first sack of mail tumbled down the chute before my cocoa was even cool, and the whole sorting room is humming like a hive of very jolly bees.

Every year, folks ask me what happens to a letter once it reaches the North Pole. So today I’m taking you behind the counter for a peek. Grab a candy cane and follow me. Mind the glitter on the floor!

Stop One: The Enchanted Mail Chute

Every letter to Santa begins its North Pole journey at the top of the enchanted mail chute. It’s a long, twisty, sparkling slide that sorts envelopes by country as they whoosh down. The letters from warm places come out smelling a little like sunshine, and the ones from snowy places arrive with frost still on the stamp.

Every letter starts its journey in a mailbox just like this one.

Stop Two: The Sorting Room

At the bottom of the chute, my team of postal elves catches each letter and gives it a gentle check:

  • Name and hometown, so Santa knows exactly who wrote to him.
  • Wish list, copied neatly into the Big Book of Wishes.
  • Kind deeds, which go straight to the Nice List department. (They love a good report!)
  • Drawings, which we pin on the Workshop wall for everyone to admire.

Postmaster’s tip

Letters with a drawing, a favorite memory from this year, or a question for Santa are the ones he loves reading most. Encourage your little writer to add one!

Stop Three: Santa’s Great Desk

Once the letters are sorted, we tie them in bundles with peppermint-striped ribbon and carry them to Santa’s great desk by the fireplace. And here is the part I want every child to know: Santa reads every single one. He chuckles at the funny ones, wipes a happy tear at the sweet ones, and keeps a special pencil just for making notes.

Santa reads every single letter. Some even get a letter back, sealed with his very own wax stamp.

Stop Four: The Reply Desk

This is my favorite room in the whole building. When Santa writes back, his letters come to the Reply Desk, where we check the spelling of each name, add the official North Pole seal, and tuck every letter into a snow-safe envelope for its trip south. Some families even receive a letter with a little keepsake tucked inside.

Santa Reply Letter

Santa writes back to your child’s letter, with the kind of details only Santa would know.

So if your family has a letter to send, now is the perfect time. The chute is open, the elves are ready, and Santa’s reading glasses are polished to a sparkle.
