Dear Nutmeg: How Do I Get on the Nice List?
Hello, gumdrop friends! It’s Nutmeg Twinkletoes here, answering questions from children, elves, and even the occasional penguin. Today’s letter is one I get more than any other:
“Dear Nutmeg, how do I get on the Nice List?
Signed, Hoping to Be Nice in New Jersey”
Well, my sweet friend, the answer may surprise you. Getting on the Nice List isn’t about being perfect. Santa knows that everyone makes mistakes sometimes, even the elves. What matters most is how you treat others and how you keep trying every day to be kind.
Here are a few of my favorite “Nice List Secrets”:
Share Joy
A smile, a laugh, or a helping hand can brighten someone’s whole day. Even holding the door or saying “thank you” counts!
Be Honest
Santa loves when children tell the truth, even when it’s hard. It shows courage and helps build trust with the people you love.
Help at Home
Whether it’s setting the table, feeding a pet, or tidying your toys, every little bit counts. Parents and caregivers notice your efforts, and so does Santa.
Be Kind to Yourself
Santa’s list isn’t just about how you treat others, but also how gently you treat yourself. Remember, nobody is perfect. What matters most is that you keep trying.
The most magical part? Every time you choose kindness, you’re sprinkling a little Christmas cheer into the world. And the more cheer you share, the brighter your spot on the Nice List shines.
So if you’ve been worrying about the Naughty or Nice List, take a deep breath and remember: being kind, trying your best, and spreading joy are what make the magic grow. Santa doesn’t expect perfection — he simply hopes you’ll keep your heart open to goodness.
And don’t forget — Santa loves you very, very much. In fact, he tells me all the time how proud he is of children who try their best, no matter how big or small their efforts may seem.
With gumdrops and good cheer,
Nutmeg Twinkletoes
